Vocabulary to aid comprehension:

• lifeboats : a small boat kept on a ship for use in emergency, typically one of a number on deck.

• life jacket : a sleeveless buoyant or inflatable jacket for keeping a person afloat in water.

• deck : a floor of a ship, especially the upper, open level extending for the full length of the vessel.

• flotation device : an object used to provide or maintain buoyancy in water.

• unrest : a state of dissatisfaction, disturbance, and agitation, typically involving public demonstrations or disorder.

• fireworks : a device containing gunpowder and other combustible chemicals which causes spectacular effects and explosions when ignited, used for display or in celebrations.

• raffle : lottery; a means of raising money by selling numbered tickets, one or some of which are subsequently drawn at random, the holder, or holders of such tickets winning a prize.

• stowaway : someone who conceals themselves on a ship, aircraft, or other passenger vehicle in order to travel secretly or without paying the fare.

• hull : the main body of a ship or other vessel

• breached : make a gap in and break through

• course : the route or direction followed by a ship, aircraft, road, or river.

• point of no return : he time when it becomes no longer possible for you to make a different decision or to return to an earlier place or state.
