Former US President Donald Trump has appeared in court in New York City to face 34 criminal charges of falsifying business records. The charges are related to alleged hush money payments made in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election, which Trump is accused of lying about on business records.
Hush money is given to people to stop them from sharing potentially damaging information to the press. While not illegal in itself, lying about it on business records is. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and it is the first time a former or sitting president has faced criminal charges.
