Water is essential for life, but too much can be dangerous. Your kidneys can only process a limited amount of water per hour. If you drink more than that, the extra water goes into your cells. This makes the cells swell. In the brain, this is very dangerous because the skull is hard and cannot expand. This can cause headaches, confusion, and even death. Water intoxication is rare but can happen to people with kidney problems or those who drink too much water quickly, like marathon runners. To stay safe, drink water when you are thirsty and stop when you are not.
