In Dubai, robots are becoming a normal sight, with delivery bots being the latest innovation developed by Dubai Future Labs. Led by Khalif G and his team, these robots are designed to autonomously deliver items like food, groceries, and medications efficiently. The process of designing and testing these bots is meticulous, involving simulations, real-life trials, and constant adjustments. For example, the team had to resize the robots after realizing they were too tall for children to interact with.

Delivery robots aim to solve the “last mile” delivery problem, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. They are equipped with advanced perception systems to detect objects, walkways, and humans, and even have temperature control for sensitive deliveries. These robots can wirelessly recharge themselves and resume tasks autonomously.

The engineers see robots not as replacements for humans but as tools to perform mundane, repetitive tasks, freeing humans for more creative work. Robots are expected to complement human efforts rather than replace them entirely. This vision aligns with the philosophy of staying curious and embracing technological progress as a means to improve lives and economies.

Vocabulary:

• Simulation: A digital or physical model used to imitate real-world conditions.

• Perception system: A system enabling a robot to interpret and react to its surroundings.

• Mundane: Ordinary and repetitive, often boring.
