Mary Mallon, an Irish cook in early 1900s New York, worked for wealthy families and unknowingly spread typhoid due to poor hygiene. Although she showed no symptoms, she was a carrier of the disease, infecting many people through the food she prepared. Several outbreaks and deaths were linked to her, but Mary refused to believe she was responsible. When health experts tracked the typhoid cases back to her, she refused to be tested and even chased one investigator away. As a result, she was forcibly quarantined for three years. After being released, she promised never to work as a cook again, but she broke that promise and continued cooking under a false name. Another typhoid outbreak was traced back to her, leading to her permanent isolation. This time, she remained in quarantine for the rest of her life. Mary became known as "Typhoid Mary," a symbol of disease carriers who unknowingly spread illness. She spent her final years in confinement and died a prisoner. Her case raised awareness about asymptomatic carriers and the importance of hygiene in preventing disease. Today, her story serves as a historical lesson about public health and the spread of infectious diseases.
