Many people decide to drink less alcohol, especially at the beginning of the year. At the same time, non-alcoholic bars, also called sober bars, are becoming more popular in the United States, especially in New York City. These bars offer social spaces where people can enjoy drinks without alcohol. This trend appears while alcohol consumption in the US is at its lowest level in almost 90 years.
One example is Hekate, the first fully alcohol-free bar in New York City, which opened in 2022. It has a calm and intimate atmosphere and attracts people who do not enjoy drinking alcohol or who cannot drink for health reasons. Customers explain that sober bars help them relax, feel included, and enjoy tasty drinks without hurting their health.
At the same time, sales of non-alcoholic drinks are increasing quickly. In 2023, these drinks grew by almost 30%, and non-alcoholic beer represents most of this market. Younger generations, such as millennials and Gen Z, are drinking less alcohol to save money and live healthier lives.
However, one important question remains: can sober bars be profitable? The owner of Hekate also runs a traditional bar nearby. She opened the sober bar to create a different type of social space and uses it as a café during the day to support the business financially.
