Liz Truss has been in office for just 45 days - the shortest premiership of any UK prime minister. She said she could not deliver the mandate she was elected on and had notified the King that she was resigning as Tory leader.
Liz Truss came to power promising a new economic and political era.
There will be a Conservative leadership election to be completed within the next week, she says. The Conservatives now have to choose a leader they think can bring stability. Whoever it is will want to last a lot longer than Ms Truss.
