According to legend, it all began when centuries ago, a goatherd observed the energy gained by his flock of goats after consuming certain red berries from nearby shrubs.
Local monks who witnessed their behaviour, boiled coffee beans to consume the liquid. From there, coffee spread to Yemen, India, Italy and the rest of the world despite attempts by Yemeni growers to establish a monopoly as travellers smuggled coffee into their homelands.
Today coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, outranked only by water.
