1. Reminder: With most verbs, the past tense is formed by adding –ed:
• enjoyed
• lived
2. If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied.
• 'try' becomes 'tried'
• 'carry' becomes 'carried'
3. But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed.
• 'play' becomes 'played'
• 'enjoy' becomes 'enjoyed'
4. If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed.
• 'stop' becomes 'stopped'
• 'plan' becomes 'planned'
5. But there are a lot of irregular past tense forms
• Be: was/were
• Do: did
• Have: had
• Bring: brought
• Choose: chose
• Drive: drove
• Eat: ate
• Feel: felt
• Find: found
• Give: gave
• Hold: held
• Keep: kept
• Take: Took
• Leave: left
• Mean: meant
• Pay: paid
• Send: sent
• Speak: spoke
• Wear: wore
