Netflix used generative artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time in its Argentine sci-fi series 'The Eternauts' to create a collapsing building scene in Buenos Aires. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said AI made the sequence ten times faster and cheaper than traditional effects, which would not have fit the budget.
AI’s use is controversial as critics fear it copies others’ work and threatens jobs. Concerns over AI even fueled the 2023 Hollywood strike, and film mogul Tyler Perry paused an $800 million studio expansion over job risks.
Despite criticism, Netflix says AI gives smaller productions access to high - quality effects. Davier Yoon from CraveFX views AI as just another tool, with artists keeping creative control. Meanwhile, Netflix’s revenue rose 16% to $11 billion in 2024, boosted by Squid Game season three’s 122 million views.
