When children learn to walk, we cheer for them even when they fall. But as they grow, we forget that failing and trying again is how we learn everything in life. At Stanford University, people started calling college students "kids" because many lacked independence. Helicopter parenting, where parents do too much for their children, seems helpful at first. Kids are safe, have guidance, and may get better grades because parents argue with teachers. But in the end, this hurts them. Parents must teach kids life skills like crossing the street, cooking, and organizing their things. There is a four-step way to do this: first, do it for them. Second, do it with them. Third, watch them do it. Fourth, let them do it alone. If kids never learn to handle life’s challenges, they will struggle as adults. They need to make mistakes, learn from them, and become responsible. Without these skills, they may not be ready to lead in schools, jobs, or families. When kids learn to walk, they start moving away from parents. This is scary, but it is normal. The goal of parenting is to raise strong, independent adults who no longer need us.
