Dog sledding is popular in Greenland, although it is less so in Washington, where a plan had been made for the US vice president’s wife, Usha, to attend Greenland’s national dog sledding championship. Key US officials, such as National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, were also planning to visit. The trip seemed more about Greenland’s importance for national and international security rather than a genuine interest in dog sledding.

However, the plan didn’t sit well with Greenland’s outgoing prime minister, who described it as aggressive American pressure. The Danish Prime Minister also opposed it, stating that Greenland didn’t need or want such a visit. As a result, the sledding plans were canceled, and a new focus was put on the US space base in Greenland. Greenland holds significant strategic value due to its location between the US and Europe, and its vast natural resources, including minerals, which has drawn the interest of the US, especially under Donald Trump.

In 2019, Trump even suggested that the US should take control of Greenland. However, polling shows that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to be part of the US, and large protests have taken place. Despite this, US officials are not backing down.
