Many people in China are now using a paid mobile application called “Are You Dead?”. The name sounds strange, but the idea behind the app is serious. It is made for people who live alone and are afraid that no one will notice if something bad happens to them. Every day, users only need to tap the app once to show that they are safe.
If a user does not check in for 48 hours, the app automatically sends an alert to a chosen contact, such as a family member or a friend. The app is mainly designed for elderly people who are not comfortable with social media. Because it is very simple to use, many people find it reassuring.
In recent years, more people in China have started living alone. In 2024, about 20% of Chinese households were single-person homes, compared to only 15% ten years ago. This change is linked to fewer marriages and to older adults living alone after their children move out. For many workers, colleagues may notice a problem before family members do.
Experts say that by 2030, China could have 200 million single-person households. This app shows how loneliness can exist even in a very connected world and has started a debate about social isolation in modern society.
