1. Reminder: With most verbs, the past tense is formed by adding –ed:
• enjoyed
• lived

2. If a verb ends in consonant and -y, you take off the y and add -ied.
• try = tried
• carry = carried

3. But if the word ends in a vowel and -y, you add -ed.
• play = played
• enjoy = enjoyed

4. If a verb ends in a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed.
• stop = stopped
• plan = planned

5. But there are a lot of irregular past tense forms
• Be = was/were
• Do = did
• Have = had
• Bring = brought
• Choose = chose
• Drive = drove
• Eat = ate
• Feel = felt
• Find = found
• Give = gave
• Hold = held
• Keep = kept
• Take = Took
• Leave = left
• Mean = meant
• Pay = paid
• Send = sent
• Speak = spoke
• Wear = wore
