In recent years, the world has witnessed various instances of extreme weather and climate-induced catastrophes such as wildfires, droughts, famines and floods all over the world.

Researchers warn that this is just the beginning. Predictions that were made for the next ten years are coming into play much earlier at the five year mark.

Urban areas and the world's cities are at the forefront of these shifts as cities claim the lion's share of the world's energy at 75% and produce more than 70% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Conversely, could cities become part of the solution instead of part of the problem? CNBC explores how cities are adapting to climate change.
