Queen Elizabeth II: A constant presence in a changing world

Her reign saw the world change dramatically, but she remained a constant presence in the lives of the people of the UK and Commonwealth.
Elizabeth was born on April 21, 1926, the first child of the then-Duke and Duchess of York.
Elizabeth, who marked 70 years on the throne this year, is the oldest and longest-reigning monarch in British history. Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey, aged just 27.
She was married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, for 73 years. He died in April 2021.
The couple had four children, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers, 14 US presidents and 10 French presidents.
She was the first British monarch ever to visit the Republic of Ireland.
