Vincent Van Gogh is an inspirational artist to many and one of the most celebrated figures in western art.
He was a Dutch painter born in the Netherlands, although he spent much of his later life in Arles, in the south of France. Despite starting late in life as a painter, he was prolific and created thousands of artworks in the span of a decade.
His distinctive work is characterized by energetic and impulsive brushstrokes. Sadly, he was unsuccessful in his lifetime and was considered a failure and a madman.
Today, he represents the quintessential idea of an artist in public imagination - someone in whom creativity and lunacy come together.
