The WNBA is expanding by adding new teams in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia, increasing the league total to 18 by 2030. While official names are not yet announced, these cities will follow the 2026 debut of the Toronto Tempos and Portland Fire. Cleveland and Detroit are returning markets, while Philadelphia is brand new.
The commissioner explained the selection criteria and noted a sharp rise in women’s basketball popularity. Attendance, viewership, and branding are all growing, helped significantly by rising star Caitlin Clark. A recent study estimates she alone contributes $1 billion to the WNBA’s economy in 2024.
Other cities like Houston, Charlotte, and Nashville submitted bids but were not selected. However, Houston may still get a team in the future as interest in the league continues to grow.
