William the Conqueror was a Norman duke who lived in the 11th century. He is best known for his successful invasion of England in 1066, which led to the Norman conquest of England. He was born in Normandy, France, in about 1028 and grew up to become a powerful and ambitious leader.

In 1066, William led an army of Norman, Breton, and French soldiers to England, where he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. This battle marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule in England and the beginning of Norman rule. William was crowned King of England on Christmas Day in 1066, becoming the first Norman king of England.

William was a strong and effective ruler who made many reforms to the English government, including the introduction of feudalism. He also ordered the construction of castles and fortifications to secure his power, including the famous Tower of London.

William is known for the creation of the Domesday Book, a comprehensive survey of England's land and resources. This book was used to determine the tax obligations of the English people and helped William to centralize and strengthen his rule.

William the Conqueror died in 1087 after ruling England for 21 years. He left behind a legacy as one of England's most powerful and influential monarchs. He changed the course of English history and played a major role in the development of the English language and culture.
