The great horned owl is one of the largest and most powerful owls in America, perfectly adapted to hunting at night. As darkness falls, the owl relies on its sharp senses. Its large eyes are specialized for night vision, but hearing is even more important. The tufts that look like horns are just feathers with no role in hearing. The owl’s true ears are hidden under its head feathers, positioned unevenly: one slightly higher than the other. This asymmetry lets sound reach each ear at a slightly different time, giving the owl extreme accuracy in locating prey.

When a deer mouse rustles through the leaves in search of seeds and insects, the owl turns its head, rotating up to 270 degrees. This movement aligns both hearing and vision, creating a powerful hunting system. Another adaptation ensures success: fringed feathers on its wings make flight almost silent. This allows the owl to keep hearing its prey while flying and prevents the mouse from detecting danger. For the mouse, the attack is sudden and impossible to anticipate.

The owl’s survival depends on hunting efficiently, and these combined adaptations—sharp sight, precise hearing, silent flight, and powerful strike—make it a formidable nighttime predator.
