In Tokyo, there is a ship that looks very strange and it has been opening up the waters of the Sumida River. This project is called "Opening the River" and it's part of DESIGNART Tokyo 2020. A Japanese artist named Yasuhiro Suzuki came up with this idea when he was on an airplane and saw a ship that made it look like the water was opening up, like a zipper on a jacket.

Suzuki likes to make art that shows familiar things in new ways. The ship is shaped like a zipper and it moves along the Sumida River. This river is important because it separates two old parts of Japan, called Musashi and Shimousa. The ship adds another layer to the river, making it look like it can split these two areas.

Because of the pandemic, the Sumida River is very quiet these days. Suzuki noticed that the water on the surface of the river looked different than before.

‘If you look at the gently flowing Sumida river, you can see the swaying water that changes its shape due to the splash of waves that the ship has set up on the sparkling water surface that reflects the sky. As the fastener ship sails, we will bring out and convey the various expressions of water that lurks around us.’
