The lives of foreign domestic workers employed by Qatar’s wealthy elite and royal families are often-overlooked. While Qatar has introduced legal reforms to improve workers’ rights, such as limits on working hours, minimum wages, and the right to change jobs, these protections are frequently ignored in practice. The story focuses on two Filipino maids whose experiences highlight strong inequalities.

Gladys, who works for an elite family, describes extremely long working days from early morning until late at night, no days off, verbal abuse, and the confiscation of her passport. Despite these conditions, she feels unable to leave because of her age, limited job options, and the need to financially support her family in the Philippines. Her situation reflects the broader reality faced by many domestic workers, who often remain silent about abuse because sending money home is their priority.

In contrast, Althea, who works for Qatar’s royal family, reports better living conditions, shared accommodation, and respectful treatment. She receives gifts and is allowed to leave the compound after work, but she still works every day without the legally required day off. Her job is demanding but shared among many workers, making it less physically exhausting.

Overall, while some domestic workers experience relatively better conditions, systemic problems remain. Weak enforcement of labor laws, power imbalances, and economic necessity continue to expose many migrant maids to exploitation and long working hours.
