Our food choices have a significant impact on climate change, accounting for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than all cars combined. A single serving of beef generates around 330 grams of carbon emissions, equivalent to driving three miles. By comparison, chicken, fish, and plant-based foods produce far fewer emissions.

Livestock, particularly cows and sheep, contribute heavily to greenhouse gases due to methane emissions, land use, and feed production. The grain used to feed cattle could instead nourish billions of people directly, reducing emissions. However, not all livestock farming is equally harmful; sustainable practices exist, but overall meat consumption remains too high, especially in the U.S.

Adopting a Mediterranean diet—rich in plant-based foods, fish, and poultry, with minimal beef—could cut global warming emissions by 15% by 2050, equivalent to removing a billion cars from the road. Even small reductions, such as limiting portions to four ounces, significantly lower emissions. Encouragingly, beef consumption has already declined by 19% in the past decade.

Ultimately, while not everyone can afford an electric car or solar panels, dietary choices offer a practical way to combat climate change. Cutting back on meat, even occasionally, leads to substantial environmental benefits.

Vocabulary:

• Sucker (noun) – Someone who is very fond of or easily tempted by something. The speaker admits to being a ''sucker'' for food, meaning they love eating, especially unhealthy food.

• Ribeye (noun) – A cut of beef from the rib section, known for its tenderness and marbling. It is mentioned as the speaker’s favorite steak.

• Crunch the numbers (idiom, verb) – To analyze data or calculate precise figures. Scientists ''crunched the numbers'' to determine the carbon footprint of different foods.

• Gassy (adj) – Producing a lot of gas. Cows and sheep are described as “gassy” because they release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

• Footprint (noun) – The environmental impact of an activity. The ''meat footprint'' refers to the emissions and resources required for meat production.

• Methane (noun) – A powerful greenhouse gas emitted by livestock. Methane is described as being at least 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

• Sustainable (adj) – Capable of being maintained without harming the environment. The video mentions ranchers working on ''sustainable'' farming methods to reduce emissions.

• Eliminate (verb) – To remove or get rid of completely. Eating grains directly instead of feeding them to livestock could “eliminate” a lot of CO2 emissions.
