The first-ever full-scale replica of Anne Frank’s attic annex is set to be unveiled next week at the Center for Jewish History in New York, timed with International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The exhibit commemorates the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation and Frank’s tragic death in 1945. This replica forms part of an ongoing campaign to address antisemitism and educate new generations on Holocaust history.

The display showcases over 100 artifacts related to Anne Frank, including a Dutch version of Monopoly she played and a 1947 letter rejecting her father Otto's attempts to publish her diaries, which would later become The Diary of a Young Girl. Unlike the traditional Holocaust exhibits, this one aims to be more interactive and personal, engaging audiences emotionally rather than focusing solely on historical facts. The exhibit seeks to make the history of Frank’s life and the broader issue of antisemitism resonate with younger visitors.

A recent study revealed that awareness of Holocaust facts is fading, particularly among younger generations. It found that a significant portion of young adults are either unaware of key details about the Holocaust or believe that the scale of Jewish deaths has been exaggerated. There is also concern among academics that Anne Frank has become overly universalized, representing human injustice at large, rather than being understood in the specific context of antisemitism and Jewish suffering during the Holocaust.

At a time when antisemitism is being increasingly debated in the U.S., the exhibition arrives amidst growing tensions, including accusations of antisemitism linked to criticisms of Israel’s policies in Gaza. The display is thus not only a memorial to Anne Frank but also an attempt to reinvigorate the conversation around the Holocaust and combat rising hate and intolerance. However, the exhibition also takes place in a climate where controversies, such as the use of AI to simulate Anne Frank and the ongoing debates about the limits of free speech regarding Israel and Palestine, are stirring public discourse.
